Triples is Jai’s first OTT offering and is in the form of a web-series, another first for the actor as well. Written by Balaji and directed by Charukesh Sekar, Triples stars Jai Sampath, Vivek Prasanna, Rajkumar and Vani Bhojan amidst others in the lead roles and is backed by Karthik Subbaraj.

Ram (Jai) is ready for his second marriage with Mythili (Madhuri) which is when his first wife Meera (Vani Bhojan), whom he had divorced just two months ago, ends up at his wedding reception with the announcement that she is pregnant, which, of course, he is oblivious to, for some time at least.

In between, he and his friends owe quite a bit of money to a comical cum ruthless (!) “Neram” kind of moneylender and in typical rom-com style, there are too many couples involved and therefore, the chaos.

First things first, while the writers have attempted something that would have been right down the alley of the late Crazy Mohan, it doesn’t quite get translated on the screen. The jokes, for the most part are petulant and fail to drive in the laughs. Beyond a point, you don’t get too kicked about people running away from those they don’t want to see.

We are also not too convinced with the reasons for Ram and Meera to part. Even their romance follows a typical pattern, however, in retrospect ends up as a better bargain of the series.

Coming to the performances, Jai is in a role that is tailor-made for him and at times, reminds you of his Goa outing. Vani Bhojan emotes neatly. Vivek Prasanna and Rajkumar, for a change, have got meaty roles and while they have indeed given their best, the writing bogs them down.

Namita Krishnamurthy as a typical Mylapore gal fits her role to the T. Vivek and Namita exhibit good chemistry, at times, even threatening to dethrone the lead pair. The cast, definitely, saves Triples to a larger extent.

You can’t help but shake off the feeling if the series would have come better off as a two-hour movie with tighter editing. Cinematography is on point. The songs give out a feel like they could have been done away with since a web-series doesn’t really require them. Vishal Chandrashekhar delivers the goods as far as BGM is concerned.

Verdict: Despite the humour working only in parts, Triples is a watchable web-series.
