Since the Indepence in 1947, India was involved in several wars with China and Pakistan. Several of the issues between India and these two countries are still disputed. Find out when the wars took place and what happened at the end.

1947 INDO-PAK WAR

1947 Indo-Pak war

In October 1947, the first war between India and Pakistan took place after armed tribesmen invaded Kashmir. Kashmir requested India for armed assistance, in return for accession of the state to India. The war ended on 1st January 1949, with the status of the territory still remaining in dispute.

1962 SINO-INDIAN WAR

1962 Sino-Indian war

India and China fought a war in 1962 on the disputed Himalayan border in which Indian posts and patrols were removed from Aksai Chin, a high-altitude desert of Himalayas. The war ended on 20th November 1962 with China declaring a ceasefire. Aksai Chin is still a disputed area between China and India.

1965 INDO-PAK WAR

The 1965 Indo-Pak war took place when Pakistan launched a secret mission so as to incite an insurgency and liberate Kashmir from India. the international community forced a ceasefire and the two countries signed an agreement in Tashkent, whereby both returned to pre-1965 territorial positions.

1971 INDO-PAK WAR

1971 Indo-Pak war

The third Indo-Pak in 1971 kicked off after Pakistan Air Force fighter aircraft launched a surprise attack on some 11 Indian airbases. India won the war capturing Dhaka, the capital of the then Eastern Pakistan and took more than 90,000 Pakistan Army personnel prisoner in just 13 days. As a result, a new nation, Bangladesh, was created.

1999 KARGIL WAR

1999 Kargil war

The 1999 war, also known as Kargil war, took place after India launched air strikes against Pakistani-backed forces that had infiltrated Indian-administered Kashmir. The war ended in October 1999, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif called upon the infiltrating forces to withdraw, under pressure from the US.
