Common consensus is that ghost films have a very small boundary within which the story travels. One of the most predominant themes in the genre is possession, an overdose of which might have spoilt the thrill for you in movies such as Conjuring 2. Here are 10 movies which don’t deal with possession and follow scarier story plots.
THE OTHERS
Starring Nicole Kidman in the lead role, The Others is one horror film which actually has a twist in the end that will leave you baffled. The ghost sequences, the sudden scares, coupled with the sans slackening engagement the script has on offer, makes it a chilling, yet satisfying experience.
THE SIXTH SENSE
Directed by the Indo-American horror specialist M.Night Shyamalan, The Sixth Sense tops the list of movies with unpredictable twists for many. The ghost sequences and scare factors are relatively fewer, but the story makes up for it with the suspense factor.
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
Wonder how it would feel if a found footage of three student filmmakers who got lost in the woods due to sinister happenings was remade into a feature film? Well, you got to watch The Blair Witch Project.
MAMA
Mama follows two little girls who get abandoned in the middle of a forest. When 6 months later, they are found by family members, they are found referring to an unknown entity as Mama.
ANNABELLE
Produced by horror specialist James Wan, Annabelle is the tale of a doll that carries a curse with it. What adds to the scare factor is that the doll is real and is kept in a case at the residence of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s museum.
THE SHINING
The Shining features Jack Nicholson in the lead and is an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Directed by ace director Stanley Kubrick, the movie’s treatment strikes bulls eye at the scare factor. What’s more interesting is, whether it deals with possession or not is let to the viewer’s perspective!
THE RING
The ring features Naomi Watts in the lead and a terrifying jynx related to a video tape. The movie while having a surreal effect to it, does not compromise on the ghost factor and is sure to grant goosebumps.
THE ORPHANAGE
The Orphanage handles a story revolving around a woman who returns to the orphanage where she was brought up along with her husband and adopted son. The film is devoid of cheap scares, but filled with chilling thrillers.
SINISTER
The film was received with mixed reviews but has enough firepower to deprive viewers off sleep. Especially since the protagonist like us, is repulsed by what he sees, but can't quite bring himself to look away.
THE CHANGELING
“How did you die Joseph? How did you die in this house?” is a dialogue that features in the film, which should speak about this classic ghost revenge film, set in the Victorian era.
