RJ Balaji's LKG, is a political satire that's based on a wafer-thin plot - the journey of a Ward Councillor becoming the Chief Minister of the State. In every way, LKG could have been an overly stretched film that keeps going on and on forever. However, RJ Balaji is in full form, keeping us engaged throughout. The story too doesn't meander at any point. LKG has in fact avoided a lot of commercial compromises that we see in such political genre films and stays true to it's intent.

The film doesn't fall into the conventional way of presenting a story since it uses memes and social media tools to push the plot forward. It strongly establishes how social media trends can affect a personality or even the outcome of elections. But, this establishment comes across as preachy and less cinematic, because, if you compile all the dialogues uttered by RJ Balaji and Priya Anand into a speech, the impact would still have been the same.

Priya Anand appears as a Data Analyst for Elections and plays her part well. Her characterization, despite being one-note, is something we've rarely seen in Tamil Cinema. She is a matured, strong-headed girl who is completely focussed on her job throughout the film. In a particular scene where RJ Balaji asks her hand in marriage, she says he is her thirteenth client. The film too treats the audience as important clients who are going to invest in it. RJ Balaji, on the other hand, pulls off Lalgudi Karuppiah Gandhi with consummate ease. The character looks really close to his real-life persona, and this makes us see him as RJ Balaji and not LKG.

This film is not just about the lead characters. Nanjil Sampath as LKG's dad, JK Rithesh as a politician, and Ramkumar Ganesan as the party leader excel in their respective roles. The hospital scene before the climax is a testament to Nanjil Sampath's acting prowess. Mayil Samy also offers good support to RJ Balaji, proving how much his experience can add flavour to a scene.

On the whole, LKG can be divided into 2 parts - A spoof of the political incidents in the past 5 years, and the serious scenes where the film tries to convey a message. While the former evokes a lot of laughter, a few sections of the audience might feel a sense of detachment between the both. It is true to the spoof genre in those scenes, and the political scenes have been handled with a lot of clarity and honesty. But when it is a political comedy, you expect both the plotlines to be coherent and that's where LKG scores in entertainment. LKG is an underdog movie that works quite well and should satisfy everyone, post the movie's smart promotions online that has built good expectation.

LKG VIDEO REVIEW

Verdict: LKG (Laughter and Knowledge Guaranteed) is an entertaining political drama, that has a thoughtful climax in RJ Balaji's style. Go for it.
