Lakshmi is a dance film that stars Prabhu Deva, Aishwarya Rajesh, and Ditya Bhande in the lead roles. Directed by Vijay, the film has Sam CS handling the music and Nirav Shah as the cinematographer.
Prabhu Deva essays the role of a dance coach and Aishwarya Rajesh plays Ditya's mother. Ditya dreams to be a dancer and join a dance academy without her mother's consent to participate in India's biggest dance show, for which she has to travel to Mumbai. Whether and how she makes it happen is what forms the story.
Vijay's films usually have a strong emotional quotient, but, Lakshmi falls slightly behind in terms of emotional attachment as the focus is more on the core theme, dance. Aishwarya Rajesh's characterization might seem incomplete and one may also feel that the actress was underused mainly due to the cinematic liberties in the screenplay.
The film was branded as a celebration of dance. Looking at the teaser, trailer and music videos, one might get a faint idea of what is going to happen in the film. Unfortunately, the film falls prey to all those cliches and ends up becoming predictable. Does Ditya make it to Mumbai to participate in the competition? Does she win the competition?
