Enna Solla Pogirai is a film written and directed by A Hariharan and produced by R Ravindran under the banner Trident Arts. It has Ashwin Kumar Lakshmikanthan, Teju Ashwini and Avantika Mishra in the lead roles while Pugazh, Swaminathan, Subbu Panchu, Delhi Ganesh and others play crucial supporting roles. The film has music by Vivek - Mervin and cinematography by Richard M Nathan.
Vikram (Ashwin) is a Radio Jockey with a popular FM in Chennai and has certain expectations about the woman he wants as his life partner. His father sets up an alliance with Anjali (Avantika Mishra), a writer who wants her partner to have been in a relationship before, so that they know the value of love.
In order to make the alliance work, Vikram convinces Preethi (Teju Ashwini), a theatre actor, to act as his ex-girlfriend. The drama that follows and what happens to Vikram's love forms the rest of the plot.
The film gets off to a middling start with a voice over that explains everything that we see on the screen. However, here's where the writer inside director Hariharan intervenes and the film remarkably resurrects itself. Till the end of the first half, the story progresses smoothly with almost no rough edges. The film never rushes, and takes its own sweet time to set things up, but at the same time, is engaging.
This writing is supported well by the female leads - Teju Ashwini and Avantika. Both of them are solid in the emotional scenes and their chemistry with Ashwin is also great. Ashwin Kumar, on the other hand is brilliant, especially in the song sequences. He needs to work on his emotional range, little more. Among the rest of the cast, Pugazh not only chips in with witty counters but also lends good support to the leads in a few emotional scenes. His combination scenes with Swaminathan also work well.
The film's negatives begin with the second half, where the screenplay starts to lag and the story becomes stagnant. It's not as bad as it sounds but the first half set the bar so high that the second half is comparatively less engaging. Preethi and Anjali's character arcs which involves them being a theatre actor and author respectively, and the way it blends with the plot is beautiful and seamless. Hariharan, the director deserves good praise for that.
Among the technicians, music directors Vivek and Mervin lift the film several notches higher than what it should have been. Their background score consists of melodies that enhances the mood of the film while many songs in the soundtrack end up as earworms. Despite having 5+ songs, most of them don't end up as speed breakers to the screenplay. The mood created is excellent and it is complemented well by Richard M Nathan's camera that makes frames look like a painting.
Overall, Hariharan's writing, Vivek-Mervin's music and Richard M Nathan's camera work ensure that the flaws are hidden well and at times it also makes you forgive them. With zero fight scenes or violence, the film is completely neat and can be watched with families. Enna Solla Pogirai engages you fairly during the 2 hour 13 minutes runtime, and also entertains you well.
