Ever since the act was released on June 18, many celebrities and artistes in the industry expressed their displeasure against it. The draft Cinematograph (Amendment) Bill, 2021 gives the Central government “revisionary powers” to re-examine or even recall certificates issued to films by the censor board.

Both Suriya and Karthi objected the amendment bill and tweeted their views against the same. Suriya said, "Law is meant to protect the freedom of expression..it is not supposed to strangle its voice," while sharing a Google document link, where people can register their comments against the draft bill. Karthi, on the other hand, said that the draft bill will allow the Central Government to cancel a film's censor certificate at any time and thus, will "severely impact business prospects for every film and hurt the industry."

While draft measures to curb piracy are commendable, it is highly undesirable to strangle freedom of expression in a civilized society as ours. Therefore request the goverment to heed our request.#CinematographAct2021 #FreedomOfExpression

When a detailed petition was submitted regarding this, CM MK Stalin took all the concerns into account and assured support on his behalf.
