Model-turned-actress Meera Mithun was arrested by Chennai police on August 14 in Kerala for using a casteist slur under 7 sections including SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act. The Bigg Boss Tamil fame star, who is known for making controversial remarks, was imprisoned along with her boyfriend Sam Abhishek.
A case was filed against her by Vanni Arasu, deputy general secretary of Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi with the Chennai Commissioner for passing derogatory remarks against the scheduled caste community during an interview on a Youtube channel. She had also said all members of the scheduled caste community should be chucked out from the film industry.
After more than a month of being imprisoned inside the Puzhal Central Jail, a lower court in Chennai granted bail to the duo, noting that ''erring'' is human nature. Though there were some words uttered by Mithun, the other petitioner also accompanied as a co-actor. Anyhow, they were in custody for nearly five weeks. Penal provisions cannot be invoked at the time of bail. It can be proved by the prosecution during the trial. Since they are in custody for five weeks and the fact that to err is human nature, this court is inclined to grant bail, Principal Sessions Judge R Selvakumar said.
Meera Mithun and her boyfriend were released on bail under the conditions that they should execute a bond of Rs 10,000 each with two sureties each for a like sum to the satisfaction of the court. They should appear before the police daily at 10.30 am until further orders and not tamper with the evidence or witness either during investigation or trial.
