In an unfortunate turn of events, singer SP Balasubrahmanyam reached heavenly abode today. He was 74. Tributes have been pouring in for him from various quarters. SPB was revered not only for his singing but for his acting as well. Here, we recount five instances when he had spellbound with his histrionics.
Keladi Kanmani
Though SPB had done acting roles before, when we think of his histrionics, the first movie that comes to our mind is Keladi Kanmani, directed by then debutant Vasanth. Maybe it's because of the strength of the role that it has stayed very effectively in our minds. SPB played a widower who couldn't help but give in to the charms of Radikaa. However, it turns out that they can't unite or at least just as yet. The film was also famous for the "Mannil Indha" song, where the legendary singer holds his breath and sings the song, during its entire course.
Thiruda Thiruda
Who could have forgotten the CBI officer in this heist film that was played to perfection by SPB? The film won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects and National Film Award for Best Choreography for Sundaram.
Kadhalan
How many of us would have loved a father like SPB who treats his son like an equal?
Kadhal Desam
SPB really shone in father roles, this time as a dad of Tabu, behind whom droves of men were after, something he could deduce in the film.
Avvai Shanmughi
The doctor in the film was a riot. His wisecracks were much appreciated.
