Shanthi theatre situated in Anna Salai, Chennai stopped screening movies from yesterday, the 17th of May. Built in 1961 by Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan, the theatre has since belonged to his family. Recently, the family had signed a joint venture with a famous property developer. According to it, a multiplex complex serving as an entertainment hub is soon to emerge in place of the existing theatre. A theatre inside the future complex carrying the same name Shanthi is also being talked of as having been planned.
Shanthi theatre was initially built by G.Umapathy in 1956 and was later bought, built and named so in 1961 by the late actor Shivaji Ganesan. The first film to be screened was his own film Paava Mannippu which was a box office hit. Notably Rajinikanth’s Chandramukhi ran for a record number of 800 days in this theatre. The family has assured everyone that the theatre will be back in a new avatar.
