Kishori Amonkar, the renowned Hindustani singer passed away yesterday (3rd April) in Mumbai at her residence. She was 84 years old. Amonkar was from the Jaipur gharana of singing. She was the recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.
Her song Saanson Ke Taar Par from the Hindi film Geet Gaayon Patharon Ne is remembered even now. She had also sung in Siskiyaan and Drishti. Her Bhajans were always soul stirring.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted conveying his condolence. He said, "Demise of Kishori Amonkar is an irreparable loss to Indian classical music. Deeply pained by her demise. May her soul rest in peace"
