The ongoing pandemic Coronavirus has changed not only the entire lifestyles of the people but also the entertainment industry as well. Several films have opted to release directly on the OTT platforms keeping the current lockdown situation in mind.
Meanwhile, an announcement made by the organizers of the Oscars on Tuesday that stated that this prestigious movie awards will break their tradition only for this year has surprised several audiences.
According to the statement, the awards will allow films that debuted on a streaming service without a theatrical run to be eligible for 2021 nominations. This change won’t be a permanent one and The Academy also said it will condense the two sound categories into one, and, in an effort to become more carbon neutral, prohibit DVD screeners for 2022’s 94th Oscars.
David Rubin, the Academy president, and Dawn Hudson, its CEO, in a statement said, “The Academy firmly believes there is no greater way to experience the magic of movies than to see them in a theater. Our commitment to that is unchanged and unwavering.” The 93rd Academy Awards are scheduled to be held in Los Angeles on February 28, 2021.
Here's what you need to know about the #Oscars:
- For this awards year only, streamed films will be eligible for Best Picture
- Going forward, the Sound Mixing and Sound Editing awards will be combined into one category: Best Sound
