Mersal has had a surprisingly grand opening, considering the confusion and chaos surrounding its release. Fans and families have been thronging to theatres to catch the movie, causing strings of houseful shows.
Rakesh Gowthaman, owner of Vettri Theatres, has tweeted: "#Mersal 3 days of #Housefull shows ... Without any doubt , no show break till Sunday night show expected ... #MersalinVettri".
Nikilesh Surya, owner of Rohini Theatres, has tweeted: "Someone remind me it's a weekday. All screens playing #Mersal sold out even for noon and matinee shows! Terrific 🙏", followed by "#Mersal most certainly be the All time highest opening week grosser! It may also break #Baahubali2 footfall record @RohiniSilverScr !! 🙏🙏🙏".

Thol. Thirumavalavan, President of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, was interviewed this morning regarding the controversy surrounding Vijay's new flick Mersal, due its dialogues criticising GST.
He said, "I have not yet watched Mersal, so I cannot comment on the dialogues. But BJP should not attack the film. It was the censor board which approved the film after reviewing its content, and so it is the censor board that should be the target of BJP's protests."
