He joined the Auditor General's Office as an Assistant Clerk and began acting in stage plays due to his interest in cinema. Janagaraj later joined director Bharathiraja as an assistant. Seeing his talent then, Bharathiraja gave him the opportunity to act in the film Kizhakke Pogum Rail and thus his film journey began. Bharathiraja's film Nizhalgal, released in 1980, gave him a big break.

Janagaraj then starred in the films of leading actors like Sivakumar, Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, and Sivaji Ganesan. There were also opportunities in the films of directors including Mani Ratnam and K. Balachander.

After a long hiatus, Janagaraj played the role of a watchman in 96, released in 2018 and starring Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha in the lead. He was last seen on screens in Dha Dha 87. It was recently reported that Janagaraj had joined Twitter on the occasion of his birthday.
