Debut director Vasanthamani’s Vetrivel hits the screens today (22nd April) and the director speaks to behindwoods about his film
“Vetrivel is my debut film. I had worked as an assistant with director TP Gajendran. After having worked in around 12 films as an assistant director, in Vijay’s Jilla I worked as an associate.
I have written the script of Vetrivel with Tanjore as the base. It is about two brothers Sasikumar and Ananth Nag. Ilavarasu and Renuka are their parents with the former doing a teacher’s role. Sasikumar has a fertilizer shop in the town mainly to woo Miya George, a Malayalee girl, who works in the agricultural department. Nikila plays Sasikumar’s wife in the film. You might wonder what Miya’s role here is. This is the twist in the story.
This is a film that totally rests on its script strength. There is no villain in the film. Everybody is good. In today’s world, relationships are far away from each other, there is no proximity as everybody is in the pursuit of financial betterment. But all the same, there is a want in them yearning for the company of their loved ones. My film will talk about this. You will get a beautiful feel of being in a family when you watch Vetrivel. All my characters are complete and exude positivity. This is a film that has to be seen by the entire family. You will not cringe taking your family to see Vetrivel.
I was a little nervous initially moving with Sasikumar sir but he broke the barrier. When he was convalescing after his mishap during Thara Thappattai shoot, we bonded really well discussing our script and we became friendly. This made things easy for me while shooting.
For my next I am again working on a village subject.”
Wishing you the best, Vasanthamani!
