20 years ago, on the same date as yesterday’s (9th May), Shankar’s iconic creation, Indian, stormed Kollywood starring Kamal Hassan in a memorable father and son dual role as Senapathy and Chandru. The film had Manisha Koirala playing the lead opposite Kamal as Chandru. Music was scored by A.R.Rahman. Cinematography was handled by the late Dhaam Dhoom director Jeeva.
The movie which was India’s submission for the Academy Awards under the category of Best foreign language films was also A.M.Ratnam’s first production venture in Tamil. Who could forget the famous epilogue in the movie where Indian thatha touts his return?
On the 20th anniversary of the film we asked A.M.Ratnam whether this long awaited sequel will take shape at all. This is what he had to say: “I’m very hopeful that Indian 2 would happen one day. But the decision remains with Shankar. He has to make the call, he being busy with movies such as 2.0”
