Vijayalakshmi made her debut in Tamil cinema with the film Chennai-28. She is the daughter of Tamil film director Agathiyan. She starred in films including Anjathe, Adhe Neram Adhe Idam, Aadama Jaichomada to name a few. She also starred in a Sun TV serial as a lead but dropped out halfway. She subsequently starred in the serial Dum Dum Dum and was also featured as a competator in Survivor on Zee Tamil.

Vijayalakshmi married her school friend Feroz. He is the director of Pandigai film starring Krishna. They have a son. Vijayalakshmi, who is very active on social media, recently shared a video of herself dancing on her Instagram page. In the video, Vijayalakshmi explains the comment made by a female fan. That comment is currently going viral on the Internet.

In the video of Vijayalakshmi dancing, the female fan commented, "Is this dance really necessary when you are a mother to a kid?"
To which, the actress gave a fitting reply, "I still have a life. So many moms still have a life after giving birth. They can do what they like to do. They can wear what they like to, they can work if they want to. A lot of women are depressed because of people like you. Stop judging anyone." Fans have been commenting in support of Vijayalakshmi's fitting response.
