Ah, we are just 2 days away from the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year, Theri starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay, Samantha and Amy Jackson in the lead roles. This cop entertainer will be hitting the screens on the 14th of April 2016. Like before all big film releases, let us analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of this Vijay starrer.
Strengths
• Yeah, it goes without saying that Ilayathalapathy Vijay is the strongest pillar of the film. Vijay is undoubtedly among the top 3 heroes of Kollywood and his market and fan base keep improving by every passing film in spite of not all his projects proving to be a box office winner.
From the trailer we could guess that Theri is about an ex-policeman who might get revenged by the antagonist. Vijay is spotted in three completely different makeovers and we can expect him to enthrall his fans with different mannerism in all the 3 roles.
• Vijay and his lucky streak with the Khaki - Ilayathalapathy doesn’t often wear cop uniform, but when he does he strikes gold more often than not.
• Like most Vijay films Theri too looks to cater to all center audiences. From the glimpse that we could catch from the trailers, Theri looks to be a film that has every essential element like action, sentiment, comedy. So the success formula is there, but is it put to correct use, is something we will have to wait and see.
• Atlee is just one film old but now he is gifted to direct Vijay for his second film. That shows the confidence of Vijay on him. Atlee looks to be confident and clear cut director who knows what he wants. Coming from director Shankar’s school, he is destined to make it big and let us hope Theri proves this.
• Samantha looks so pretty and her chemistry with Vijay might work well on screen, going by the photos released so far. She looks to be playing Vijay’s wife and she might also share the screen space with Vijay in 3 to 4 songs.
• GV Prakash’s songs are already ruling the radio charts and the songs are likely to reach better with the visuals.
• The cute looking baby Nainika has already garnered quite a number of fan followers with her adorable expression and people are wanting to see a lot more of her.
• Technically the film appears great - Theri features the expertise of cinematographer George C Williams, art director Muthuraj and editor Ruben.
Weakness
• How would a 2 hour 38 minute film accommodate space for 7 tracks plus one theme track? So there is a possibility that the songs might take the shine away in spite of being good.
• There are talks that Theri could be inspired by Vijayakanth’s 1990’s starrer Kshatriyan. If it is so, there might be a few clichés that might not go well with everyone.
Opportunities
• There are talks that Theri 2 might happen but it all depends upon the trade prospects of this film.
• Theri's success could open a lot of avenues for Atlee who also has a production firm. His career might take a different shape if Theri becomes a hit.
• Trade wise 2016 has been pretty average and the industry deserves to have a big hit.
Threat
• There is an ongoing issue with few Theri distributors and the theatre owners and many theatres are still hesitant to screen the film due to few discrepancies between distributors and single screen theatre owners.
• Shah Rukh Khan enjoys a good fan base in Tamil Nadu as well. And his Hindi film Fan will be releasing on the 15th of April just one day after Theri’s release. We will have to wait and see if it affects the outcome of Theri.
