Sri Lanka Crisis: Finance Minister resigns a day after his appointment - details

Ali Sabry, who was sworn in as the new finance minister of Sri Lanka yesterday amidst the ongoing severe economic crisis, resigned today.

Crisis

The Sri Lankan Government is facing a severe economic crisis. The price of petrol, diesel and gas cylinders is at an all-time high. As a result, food prices have skyrocketed. People are suffering due to rising prices of essential commodities including rice, bread and milk.

Moreover, Sri Lankans are being forced to stand in long queues to buy groceries. In addition, the public is dissatisfied with the Government for causing 13-hour power cuts every day.

Resignations

26 cabinet ministers from the ruling party resigned simultaneously last Sunday. Following this, four new ministers were sworn in yesterday. GL Peiris was sworn in as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dinesh Gunawardena as Minister of Education, Johnston Fernando as Minister of Highways and Ali Sabry as Minister of Finance.

In this context, there is a stir in Sri Lankan politics following Sabry's resignation today.

Opposition parties

President Gotabaya Rajapakse has called for the formation of a new cabinet with the participation of opposition parties following the resignation of ruling party ministers following the severe economic crisis in Sri Lanka. But parties, including Sri Lanka's main opposition SJP, have ignored the call and are fighting to oust the President.
