In retaliation, the Ukrainian military has launched a counter-offensive on the ground. Clashes between the two armies have reached a climax in the Ukrainian cities of Kiev, Kharkiv and Mariupol.

The United Nations says the war has killed thousands of Ukrainians and forced 3 million to take refuge abroad.

The Ukrainian Government said Lieutenant General Yakov Rezantsev, commander of the 49th Armed Forces Division of the Russian Army, has been killed in an attack by Ukrainian armed forces.

So far, 4 Russian commanders have been reportedly killed in the Ukrainian war, and now, the Ukrainian Government has announced that one more Russian general has been killed in the war.

In a video released by Oleksi Aristovich, adviser to the Ukrainian president, General Yakov Rezantsev, commander of the 49th Russian Southern District Army, was killed by Ukrainian forces in an attack on Sornobovka, near Kerson.

On the fourth day of the war in Ukraine, Yakov Rezantsev, who was now declared dead, had told his troops that the war would end in a few hours.

Speaking on the occasion, the soldier said, "The military operation will end in a few hours, but it is still going on."
