Russia declares partial ceasefire in Ukraine to allow humanitarian corridors

Russia has now issued an important announcement amidst the ongoing Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Russia has been attacking Ukraine for more than a week. Russia is leaving no stones unturned to seize the key cities in Ukraine. Accordingly, the Russian military has intensified targeting major Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv and Kharkiv.

The ongoing tensions has forced the Ukrainian airspace to shut down for the past 10 days. This has created a panicked environment where foreigners cannot leave the country.  Indians stranded in Ukraine are being repatriated through neighboring countries, including Romania and Hungary.

Indians living in cities bordering Russia were unable to travel to neighboring countries as well.. Therefore, a request was made on behalf of the Indian Foreign Ministry that Russia should co-operate in rescuing the Indians.

India's ambassador to Russia, recently said that he was considering building a special humanitarian corridor to prevent Indians from leaving. Now, Russia has announced a temporary halt to the war in Ukraine so that the civilians can leave safely. President Putin has ordered the Russian military to stop the war for now.

Russia's defence ministry announced a ceasefire Saturday to allow residents of two besieged cities to evacuate. Foreigners and the public are advised to use this time to move to safer places. It is noteworthy that no announcement has been made as to how long this ceasefire would exist.
