US Elections 2020: Special Poojas Performed for Kamala Harris' in Thiruvarur; Free Idli, Sambhar Distributed | Watch
Home > News Shots > World newsAs US Elections 2020 kicked off today, residents of Tamil Nadu’s Thulasendrapuram village, performed a special puja at the Sri Dharma Sastha temple for the Democratic Party vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
People of the ancestral village of Kamala Harris’ maternal grandfather organised prayers for her party’s victory.
During the special prayer, free idli and sambhar were also distributed to all devotees who were present for the pooja. Around 200 people took part in it.
"We want her to win the polls, we are praying for her,” a local from the village told news agency ANI. Since morning posters were also put in the village, wishing Kamala luck ahead of the US elections.
The village shot to fame after Harris' nomination as the Democratic vice-presidential candidate for the US elections. Kamala Harris is the vice-presidential candidate for the Republican Party while Mike Pence is the running mate of Trump.
Looking into the posters, it read as "From Thulasenthirapuram to America. US vice president candidate contestant from the native origin of Thulasenthirapuram Kamala Harris, we wish her great success."
Meanwhile, Kamala Haris’ mother Shyamala Gopalan, a leading cancer researcher who moved to the US for studying, was an Indian and her father was a Jamaican. While, Shyamala’s father, PV Gopalan, was a high-ranking civil servant, was born in Thulasenthirapuram, 320 km south of the city of Chennai.
Former vice president Joe Biden’s Democratic Party is fighting up against incumbent President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in the polls currently. To win the elections, either Trump or Biden have to acquire over 50 percent of the electoral college vote, which is 538 in total.
