Home > News Shots > World newsA new tick- borne virus has started spreading a disease that has affected 60 people and killed seven in China. According to the official media reports released on Wednesday, there is a possibility of human transmission.
Around 37 people who live in East China’s Jiangsu Province have been affected by the SFTS Virus in the first half of the year. 23 people were later affected by the virus in East China’s Anhui province.
Symptoms such as fever and coughing were observed from by one of the patients, a woman from Nanjing. Doctors have detected a decrease of leukocyte and blood platelet inside her body. She was discharged from the hospital after undertaking treatment for a month. At least seven people from the Anhui and Zhejiang province have died due to the virus.
“SFTS Virus is not a new virus. China has isolated pathogen of the virus in 2011, and it belongs to the Bunyavirus category,” The New Indian Express reported.
Virologists are of the view that the infection might have passed on initially from ticks to humans and later transmitted from one human to another.
Sheng Jifang, a doctor from the first affiliated hospital under Zhejiang University, said that the possibility of human-to-human transmission cannot be eliminated; patients could contract the virus or pass it on to others via blood or mucous.
Doctors have warned that despite the possibility of human transmission, ticks are the major cause hence as long as people remain cautious, they need not worry about the virus contagion.
