According to reports, statistics have been released showing that more than 120 pregnant minke whales were killed due to scientific research by Japan. The country had been performing a 12-week annual research on the Southern Ocean.
During the annual research last year, nearly 333 minke whales were captured. Out of these, 181 were female. The female whales consisted of 122 pregnant ones as well. While conservationists slammed the act as 'abhorrent', Japan argued that it was all for science.
Alexia Wellbelove, a senior program manager at Humane Society International reportedly said, "The killing of 122 pregnant whales is a shocking statistic and sad indictment on the cruelty of Japan’s whale hunt."
