Home > News Shots > World newsPresident Donald Trump in an announcement on Monday said that he is taking Hydroxychloroquine for prevention against COVID19 despite red flags being raised by medical experts advising against the usage of the malaria drug.
In a question and answer session with reporters at White House when he said “I’am taking Hydroxychloroquine, I’ve been taking it for the last week and a half. A pill every day.”
“Frontline workers...many, many are taking it,” Trump told the media at the White House according to CNN. “Hydroxychloroquine. I am taking it. Couple of weeks ago, started taking it. Heard a lot of good stories. And if it's not good, I am not gonna get hurt by it. It’s been around for 40 years, for malaria, for lupus. Frontline workers take it, doctors take it, he said”
Weeks ago, Trump promoted the drug believing that It is a potential cure against COVID19 but studies that came out later proved that it is not helpful. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning against the usage of the drug.
In a statement released by the FDA on April 24 stated that it was “aware of reports of serious heart rhythm problems” in patients with COVID19 treated with Hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine.
However, White House physician Sean Conley told in a memo released by the White House that “After numerous discussions he and I had regarding the evidence for and against the use of hydroxychloroquine, we concluded the potential benefit from treatment outweighed the relative risks."
Trump told the media that the white house physician and doctors advised him that it is alright to take the drug, “Well, if you’d like it.”
The President also said that he is taking a single dose of azithromycin, an antibiotic meant to prevent infection along with hydroxychloroquine and zinc.
“All I can tell you is so far I seem to be OK,” he added.
