The 70-year old Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the retired lieutenant colonel who also goes by the name "Terminator" by his own family. He defeated Sajith Premadasa of the ruling party and won 53-54 per cent of the vote.

"It is a clear win. We envisaged it. We are very happy that Gota will be the next president. He will be sworn in tomorrow or the day after," spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Gotabaya Rajapaksha along with brother Mahina Rajapaksha (President of SL from 2005-2015) gathered Sinhalese military forces and allegedly killed lakhs of Tamil people in the Eelam War, thus ending a 37-year war between Tamil and Sinhalese forces on 18 May 2009.
