The COVID-19 outbreak has so far infected 35,702,309 people worldwide with the global death toll reaching 1,045,955. As people await for the coronavirus vaccine, the chief of the World Health Organization (WHO) said that a vaccine against COVID-19 may be ready by year-end.

While addressing the end of a two-day meeting of its Executive Board on the pandemic, the WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said: "We will need vaccines and there is hope that by the end of this year we may have a vaccine. There is hope."

As per Reuters report, till date nine experimental vaccines are in the pipeline of the WHO-led COVAX global vaccine facility that aims to distribute 2 billion doses by the end of 2021.

During the meeting, the chief of WHO, also stated that 70 percent of the COVID-19 cases are located in just 10 countries and 50 percent cases are located in just 3 countries.

“Not all countries have responded the same way, and not all countries have been affected the same way," he added.

Further taking to social media and terming the pandemic as a ‘wake up call’, he also thanked all the nations who have come forward with plans and suggestions on curbing the pandemic.
