Coronavirus Scare: Indians Stuck in Japan Ship; Minister Speaks About Update

Japan ship Diamond Princess was quarantined after 10 people abroad tested positive for the deadly Coronavirus. Later, 10 more people were additionally found to be carrying the virus and receiving medical care amidst the preparations for the Tokyo Olympics. Now, S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister has updated about the status of some Indian crew and passengers who have been quarantined on the ship.

"Many Indian crew and some Indian passengers are on board the cruise ship Diamond Princess quarantined off Japan due to Coronavirus. None have tested positive, as per the latest information provided by our Embassy (in Tokyo). We are closely following the developments," Jaishankar said in a tweet.

So far India has reported three positive cases of Coronavirus, all from Kerala, from students who were studying in Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the virus; so far, the toll in China has crossed 700. Infections have crossed 34,000. Experts are worried that the epidemic could become even more deadlier than SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

Meanwhile, the United States has offered $100 million to China to combat the deadly virus.

Here are some simple ways to prevent yourself from Coronavirus:

  • Wash your hands as often possible with alcohol-based rub or hand sanitiser.
  • Wear protective masks and avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with those affected with the virus.
  • Sneeze or cough into your elbow. Immediately, clean yourself with alcohol-based soap or hand sanitiser.
  • Don’t wash your masks and re-use them. Discard after one-time use.
