While the focus of Chennai Corporation, media as well as the citizens has been on the rising number of cases in Royapuram, Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar and Kodambakkam zones, the statistics released by Greater Chennai Corporation show that there has been a spike in zones such as Madhavaram, Adyar and Sholinganallur.

The data between May 4 to May 10, show that the number of cases in Royapuram had risen by 107%(doubled). Around the same time period, Adyar Zone saw a spike of COVID19 cases by 448% (5.5 Times). Likewise, cases went up by 5.1 times in Madhavaram and 4.2 times by Sholinganallur zone. 

In the period between May 4 to May 17, Sholinganallur reported a 13—fold jump in number of cases whereas Adyar and Madhavaram showed a jump by 11.6 times. “For instance, cases in Adyar and Sholinganallur shot up in few days due to the Thiruvanmiyur market and the Kannagi Nagar slum clearance board apartments clusters,” an official told Times of India. 

According to media reports, cases reported in residential colonies in Madhavaram were associated with the milk factory and Koyambedu market cluster. Ambattur Zone, had not reported any case for three weeks but saw a fivefold jump between May 4 to May 18. 

Special Officer, J Radhakrishnan told the media that the Greater Chennai Corporation has formed street-wise plans for different zones to curb the spread of the virus. For example, the containment strategies employed in Kannagi Nagar and Royapuram will be different and devised based on the COVID19 trends in that particular area.
