The people were awed by the beautiful fluorescent blue colour emitted in the waves. Beaches like Besant Nagar beach, ECR beaches, Thiruvanmiyur beaches put up a glow in the tides.

As people from various parts of the city came to check, the beaches had quite a bit of traffic.

The reason for the glow is gue to bioluminescent microbes. A phytoplankton called dinoflagellates emit such colours. It is done to attract big fish to prey on the smaller fish that tries to eat the microbe. Whenever the microbes feel danger, they emit radiance.

Though it is pretty, this could spell trouble when emitted in large. These planktons contain toxins. When present in large, it will affect the food chain and will pass on the toxic substance to the fish and to the humans eating them, reports Vikatan.

This has been observed in various parts of the earth in different times. It is said to be an outcome of global warming.
