According to reports, the Vedanthangal bird sanctuary in Kancheepuram district was kept closed for visitors from June 1 as the drought left the lake nearly dry.

Reportedly, the migratory birds will start flocking the lake and its surroundings from the first week of November and the nesting period will go on till June-end. However, this year, by May-end, the four lakes are almost empty and thousands of birds have left already.

From the time the bird sanctuary opened its doors to visitors on September 30 last year, more than 22,000 birds have visited Vedanthangal this season, forest range officer G. Subbaiah was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
