Vedanta on Wednesday warned that an acid leak from the Sterlite copper plant in Tuticorin was severe and inaction could lead to severe environmental consequences. Earlier, the leak was reported to be minor and tanks were emptied as a precaution. The company has also sought limited reconnection of power supply to guard against potential environmental damage.
“There is a severe leakage in the pipe flanges and ... the pipe flanges are submerged in the acid pool collected in the dykes around the acid storage tank,” the company has said in a petition to the Madras High Court.
