According to reports, the families of those killed in road accidents will get Rs 5 lakh minimum as a compensation as the provision that requires third insurance companies to pay the amount is learnt to have come into force this month. Earlier, Rs 50,000 was given as minimum compensation.

The Union Road Transport Ministry amended the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 in May to offer the benefit to the families of deceased. However, the families of victims can approach tribunals seeking higher compensation as there is no upper limit for maximum compensation.
