An Inspector and a police constable from Chennai Police raised Rs.5 lakh for a 5-year-old girl’s open-heart surgery. The surgery was successful and the girl was discharged on Saturday.

The 5-year-old girl, Kavishka had multiple heart conditions from the time of her birth. Her father Karthik, who works in sales at an electronic shop lived in Guduvanchery. P. Senthil Kumar, head constable, and writer at the Nandambakkam police station was their neighbour.

Kavishka had undergone three angiograms and was under medication. However, the doctors suggested another angiogram. “Karthik’s financial condition worsened during the lockdown so he kept postponing his daughter’s treatment,” said Senthil. Initially, he arranged Rs.30,000 for her treatment.

Unfortunately, due to continuous postponement, Kavishka needed open-heart surgery to remove a block.

“The surgery cost was Rs.5 lakh. Karthik was hesitant to seek help and did not tell how dire the situation was. I came to know about the condition from a neighbour,” added Senthil Kumar, who immediately approached his inspector M. Thangaraj. Both of them stepped in and crowdsourced the fund. Kavishka underwent the surgery for 7 hours on July 1 and was discharged last Saturday.

“I am happy that our timely help could save the child’s life. I hope seeing this, others come forward and help those in need,” said inspector Thangaraj.
