A 65-year-old woman Rukmani died in Athimoor village in Porur of Tiruvannamalai district after she and her family members were attacked by the public at a temple here after mistakenly thinking them to be a gang that indulges in child trafficking on Wednesday.

Puthiya Thalaimurai reports quote local cops as saying that the woman and her group were innocent and the villagers were in the wrong for thrashing them hastily without learning the hard facts.

It is further learnt that Chandrasekhar and Mohankumar, who were part of the group, who visited the village to pay respects to their ancestral deity, started playing and distributing chocolates to children they had bought from Malaysia recently, when public grew suspicious of their act and indulged in violence even though the party had left the temple by then in their car, sensing hostility from the villagers.
