According to reports, the Tamil Nadu government has increased the compensation amount to the families of those who were killed and injured in the police firing in Thoothukudi. The government has raised the amount following the intervention of Madras High Court, which directed the state government to consider increasing the amount of compensation.
The families of the deceased will now receive Rs 20 lakh as compensation each, which was earlier Rs 10 lakh. The government has increased the compensation to those who suffered serious injuries in the police firing from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh. Further, the people who sustained mild injuries will now get Rs 1.5 lakh, which was earlier Rs 1 lakh.
The protest against the Sterlite copper plant on Tuesday turned violent when police vehicles were charred and protesters attempted to take the district collectorate under siege. Police opened fire at the anti-Sterlite protesters resulting in the killing of at least 11 people initially. Another youth was killed in the police firing, which continued the next day. The death toll rose to 13 when another injured man succumbed to injuries on Thursday.
