Cyber Crime police in Coimbatore are investigating an incident in which money vanished from bank accounts of people who withdrew money from a particular ATM in Singanallur in the city. All those who lost their money, varying from Rs 40,000 to Rs 4 lakh, withdrew cash from an ATM in Kamarajar Salai, Varadharajapuram in Singanallur.
The incident came to light when Balamurugan from the area filed a complaint with the police after he received an SMS from the bank saying Rs 40,000 was debited from his account. It was revealed that many people have filed similar complaints. Police have reportedly seized the CCTV footages from the ATM, which has now been shut down.
Money has been withdrawn from the accounts of victims in cities including Bengaluru and Coimbatore. Cyber Crime police have begun an investigation to ascertain if skimmer was used to steal the information such as debit or credit card details.
