The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai on Monday said that Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu may witness heavy rains. Parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry may receive rains ranging from slight to mild in the next 24 hours, the Centre reportedly said.

In Chennai, the sky will be cloudy and the city is likely to receive slight rain coupled with thunder in the evening or night. Meanwhile, a flood alert was issued to those living on the banks of Cauvery river in Salem amidst the rising water levels in Mettur dam.

The weather agency has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea due to the intensifying southwestern monsoon rains. Heavy winds will blow in the speed range of 70-80 kmph in the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastal regions, the meteorological centre said.
