According to reports, six men, who were arrested in connection with the violence during the protest against Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi, have been booked under the National Security Act. All the six are associated with Makkal Adhikaram group and are lodged in Palayamkottai central prison.
Reports suggest that all the six - Kaleel Rahman, Mohammed Younis, Mohammed Ishraf, Velmurugan, Saravanan and Sottaiyan of the Makkal Adhikaram group - booked under the NSA based on district collector Sandeep Nanduri’s order.
Following the violence during the protest, police opened fire and killed at least 11 persons on May 22. Police killed another youth on May 23 when the firing continued and the death toll rose to 13 when one of the injured succumbed the next day.
