Speaking to the press on Saturday, Thoothukudi district collector Sandeep Naduri revealed that nearly 1,300 tons of sulphuric acid was removed from the Sterlite plant. The news comes as an update after it was announced that there was a sulphuric acid leak at the plant recently,
The leak was confirmed by officials on June 17, stoking fear in the hearts of Thoothukudi residents. Sterlite copper plant officials had to move the court to get permission to go inside the factory to stop the acid leak.
After an intense and violent protest to close Sterlite on May 22 following which 13 people died, the state government ordered the plant to be permanently shut down.
