Chennai is the cultural hub of South India, best known for its affluent heritage, culture and arts, etc. However, this time all the noise is about chess.
Chennai is the mecca of Indian chess and it is also a place where history has been made. Chennai is all set to host the world’s biggest chess tournament, the 44th International Chess Olympiad, scheduled to take place from July 28 to August 10 at Poonjeri Village in Mamallapuram, a UNESCO heritage site, just 50 kilometres from the city. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) elected India to host the event for the first time and Chennai has already set the world record. This is one of the biggest events in the tournament's history, with nearly 2000 participants from 187 countries in attendance.
However, the curtain raiser held on Sunday created another world record becoming the largest Open with 1,414 players taking part in the test tournament where all the games were played on electronic boards. 'Thambi', the cool mascot, the knight of an upright frame, folded hands, dressed in a white shirt and vetti (dhoti) exuding charisma and personality, is already becoming a household name.
The premium cotton dhotis and shirts are everything that represents Indian culture and tradition. While Ramraj is deeply rooted in our heritage and culture, we market dhotis that are in line with today’s fashion and modern trends. Today, Ramraj is an innovator in the Indian fashion industry, bringing dhotis to people of all ages. Ramraj has indeed elevated the status of the humble dhotis to stellar heights.
Ramraj is very proud and pleased to present the brand new 'Thambi Vetti', a special edition of dhotis available for a limited time, a tribute to Namma Chennai Namma Chess, ‘Thambi the mascot’ and the pride of the state. The premium dhoti with the chequered border resonates with the heritage and pride of the game that originated in India and elevates the charm and elegance of the wearer.
The all-new 'Thambi Dhotis' bordered with the classic black and white chequer instead of the usual colours is a twist to our tradition, just perfect for comfort, class and style. We believe that anyone with the sense of tradition shall never miss this one.
So, Thambi Vettiya kattiko, chess potiyila jeychiko, which translates to wear the Thambi dhoti and win the game of chess.
