The Madras High Court on Friday rejected an appeal from Nalini, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, for premature release. The former Prime Minister was assassinated in 1991 in Sriperumbudur. Nalini, who was initially sentenced to death, had her sentence commuted to a life term in 2000 by the then Governor upon an appeal from the state government to the centre. Nalini has spent about 25 years in jail and is currently lodged in Vellore Central Prison.
