Amidst the ongoing unrest in Thoothukudi over the killing of at least 11 people in police firing, a police vehicle has been set on fire by unidentified persons. The glasses of police jeep and bus near the government medical college hospital in the harbour town were damaged in stone pelting. Police personnel are involved in removing residents near the area where the police vehicle is in flames.

People, earlier on Wednesday, protested at the hospital against conducting the post-mortem of those who were killed in the shooting. Police dispersed them by resorting to lathicharge and tear gas. Later, the doctors at the hospital began post-mortem after the protesters were dispersed.

The police have requested people to maintain peace and not resort to any form of violence. People are banned from gathering and holding rallies since the district collector ordered the extension of section 144 throughout the district following the violence and police shooting.
