The suicide of IIT Madras student Fathima Latheef has created an uproar among the humanitarians who have been staging protest against the management to take necessary action on the person involved.

Reportedly the suicide note of Fathima Latheef revealed the name of  "Sudarshan Padmanabhan (Associate Professor of Philosophy, Dept of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras)” who had discriminated the girl based on religion. As Fathima Latheef belongs to Kerala, her father had approached CM Pinarayi Vijayan who also ensured necessary support to the girl's family.

Apparently, it is not the first suicide in the history of IIT as there were many across different institutions in India. The suicide count in IIT institutions was shared by one of the journalists Mahalingam Ponnuswamy via his twitter account.

As per the report, IIT madras tops the list with 14 suicides in the past 10 years followed by Kharagpur with 13 suicides and Guwahati with 8 suicides in the third place.  The year 2019 has seen the most number of IIT suicides (4) in the last ten years.

Meanwhile, Abdul Latheef, the father of Fathima Latheef had expressed his strong stand to fight against the culprits and was quoted as saying, "My daughter faced casteist and religious discrimination from her faculties. Earlier she said that her name (Muslim name) itself is a problem there,” by Maktoobmedia.
