According to reports, a major fire broke out in the rocket and missiles laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras on Tuesday morning. Though the reason for the fire has not yet been identified, sophisticated equipment, explosives and propellants became prey to the fire.
The fire was reportedly noticed by construction labourers and security staff at around 7.45 am. Silambarasan, a construction worker reportedly said, “While working, we heard a loud blast. We found thick smoke billowing from the first floor of the laboratory. Fire engulfed the building and there were three more blasts.”
The cause of the fire and the damages acquired is yet to be ascertained. Reportedly, the lab has been closed off and no researcher allowed inside.
