Thousands of people gathered near Chidambaram Nagar bus stand in Thoothukudi on Saturday to protest against the expansion plans and operation of the Sterlite Copper Plant in the district. Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan took to Twitter to voice his support for the protesting at the district. The actor-turned-politician wrote, “This anti -sterlite peoples agitation needs media support. My new status as a party leader need not be a disqualification or a deterent. I am still part of the Tamizh population. I am committed to this cause”.
