‘Veda Nilayam’ in Poes Garden which was Late CM Jayalalithaas’s former residence, is now set to be converted into a government memorial. The decision was taken by the Tamil Nadu government.

An ordinance has been promulgated by the Tamil Nadu government. Veda Nilayam is the place where Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was residing for over 40 years. 

Tamil Nadu Governor promulgates ordinance to temporarily take possession of 'Veda Nilayam', residence of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and movable items therein to establish 'Puratchi Thalaivi Dr J Jayalalithaa Memorial Foundation' to take steps to convert Veda Nilayam as a memorial.

Earlier, Chennai Collector R. Seethalakshmi issued a declaration that the acquisition of the property is needed for a “public purpose”. Section 19 (1) of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013 and RULE 16 of Government rules were cited to do so. 

This property was purchased by Former CM Jayalalithaa and her mother, Sandhya in July 1967 at a cost of Rs. 1.32 lakh. The residence spans across 24,000 sq. Ft. And was valued at Rs 43.97 crore in 2016.
