Ranjith, a 22-year-old youth, who was shot dead by police during the 100th day of protest against the Sterlite factory in Thoothukudi aspired to join the military, says a report in TNM.

 

One Kumar, the deceased's uncle told The News Minute that Ranjith was a blood donation activist. He reportedly said, “Ranjith had organised many blood donation drives. He used to donate blood once every week”.

 

Bhaskar, the victim’s father said that Ranjith aspired to join the military. He said, “He wanted to join the military. He had recently gone to Ramnad district for a selection trial but did not make it. He said he would try again”.

 

The police shootout in Thoothukudi was widely criticised by politicians and activists and has received a huge backlash. However, TN CM Edappadi Palaniswami justified the incident that it was an act of self-defense.
