Despite receiving 20% more rainfall in pre-monsoon, Chennai remained dry last month. Many districts of Tamil Nadu received light showers on Saturday.
Outskirts including Tambaram and parts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Chennai belt (KTC) also received light showers on Friday. June is expected to bring mild showers to the city, while heavy rainfall is not expected any time soon.
"With westerlies setting in, the convergence is shifting closer to the coast. The weak monsoon is helping in the formation of thunderstorms while the heat aided by moisture and the long gap are signs that rains in the KTC belt will start with the heavy downpour. Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruvannamalai and Salem will see intense rains," said weather blogger Pradeep John.
