The first paediatric heart transplant in Tamil Nadu was performed at the Government Multi Super-Specialty Hospital in the Omandurar Estate, says The New Indian Express report. A 10-year-old boy from Kancheepuram received the heart transplant and is recovering at the hospital.

M Praveen Kumar, the younger son of D Munusamy and M Jesi from Santhananthapuram in Kancheepuram, underwent the transplant 14 days ago, the report said. The heart for transplant was harvested from a 26-year-old brain-dead person in MIOT Hospital.

Chief of Cardiothoracic department Dr S Manoharan, who performed the transplant, told TNIE that the transplant was completed in four and a half hours. The boy was diagnosed with viral Myocarditis, which leads to dilated cardiomyopathy, “a condition in which the heart becomes enlarged and cannot pump blood effectively,” he reportedly said.
